Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
